Jacob J. Stegner & Mary Woest Family

 

Jacob J. Stegner was born on 21 November, 1852 in Philipsburg, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany.Jacob immigrated to the United States in 1872. Jacob married Mary Woest on 27 February, 1876 at Elmont, New York.

 

Before moving to West Hempstead, Jacob maintained a large farm in the Munson area of New York. The farm was located on the East side of John Street (later changed to Nassau Boulevard) North of 7th Street.

 

Sometime before 1914 a large part of the Stegner farm was sold. The 1915 census lists Jacob as being retired in West Hempstead. Jacob’s sons, Jacob and William were farming the remaining Stegner property on Nassau Boulevard in 1920. There was still a small farm on Nassau Boulevard to at least to 1927 as shown on a Belcher-Hyde map. 

 

Mary Woest was born about 1850 in Germany. Mary died on 7 April, 1892 at New Hyde Park. Mary is buried in the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elmont, New York.

 

After Mary died, Jacob married Annie Grossarth Purdy on 1 December, 1909 in Kings, New York. This was Annie’s second marriage. The 1920 census has Jacob and his second wife, Annie, living on Sycamore Street in Hempstead, New York. 

 

Jacob died on 9 February, 1937 in West Hempstead, Nassau County, New York. He is buried in the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elmont, New York.

 

Annie contested Jacob’s will after his death in 1937. Jacob’s last will stated that Annie was to only receive $100.00 of his estate. Jacob’s estate was valued at $100,000.00. Annie lost the contested will lawsuit. Annie Stegner died on 12 April, 1939 and is buried in the Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale, New York.  

 

Jacob Stegner and Mary Woest had eight children together. 

 

Anna Magdalena “Lena” Stegner was born on 21 December, 1876 in Fosters Meadow, Queens County, New York. Anna Magdalena went by the name of “Lena” and her records reflect the use of this name.

 

Frank Barth 32, married Anna Magdalena “Lena” Stegner, when she was 21 years old. They were married on 20 April, 1897. The witnesses to their wedding were Henry and Anna Woest.

Frank and Lena in 1900 were living in North Hempstead and Frank was working as a day laborer. The Barth family in 1910 were living on John Street in Hempstead. Frank was then employed as a house carpenter. On the 1915 census frank was working as a farmer. The family was still living on John Street in North Hempstead. 

 

On the 1920 on the census Lena was listed as the head of the family. She was living on Nassau Boulevard in Hempstead. Frank was not listed with Lena on this census. 

 

Lena is again listed on a 1930 census as being the head of the house without Frank. 

 

On a separate 1930 census, Frank Barth was living on Nassau Boulevard, in Hempstead in the Munson area. Frank was listed as living alone and working as a building watchman. Frank died on 28 February, 1934 and the New York Death Index list his death location as Amityville. No burial found for Frank Barth.

 

Lena Barth died on 9 January, 1937 at Mineola according to the St. Paul’s Church record. In his youth, Fred Barth Jr. remembers visiting the Stegner plot at the St. Paul’s Church Cemetery. Fred Junior’s father, Fred Senior and his brother, John Barth, paid the final burial expenses for Lena and tended to the family plot.

 

Frank and Lena had nine children together:

Frank Walter Barth Jr. was born on 21 May, 1897 at New Hyde Park, New York and died on 27 May, 1982 at Hempstead, Nassau County, New York. Frank is buried in the Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale, Nassau County, New York. 

 

John Barth was born on 9 September, 1898 (Social Security Death Index) at New Hyde Park, New York and died on 24 February, 1971 at Eagle Lake, Polk, Florida. 

 

Annie Barth was born on 5 January, 1901 at New Hyde Park, New York (N.Y. State Birth Records) and her death is unknown. 

 

Philip Barth was born on 6 December, 1902 at New Hyde Park, New York and died on 2 May, 1972 at Merrick, Nassau County, New York. Philip is buried in the Cemetery of the Holy Rood, Westbury, Nassau County, New York. 

 

Helen Lena Barth was born on 4 February, 1905 at New Hyde Park, New York and she died on 19 December, 1972 at West Hempstead, Nassau County, New York. Helen is buried in the Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale, Nassau, New York. 

 

Frederick “Fred” George Barth Sr. was born on 24 February, 1907 at Garden City, New York and died on 25 August, 1979 at Broward, Florida.

 

Louise Margaret Barth was born on 9 February, 1909 at New Hyde Park, New York and she died on 28 August, 1974 in Broward, Florida. She buried on 3 September, 1974 in the Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York (U.S. Veterans Gravesites). 

 

George Barth was born on 19 December, 1910 at Hempstead, New York and died on 15 March, 1978 (Veterans Affairs Office). He may be buried in the Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale, New York. 

 

William John Barth was born on 1 January, 1913 at Munson, New York and he died on 15 March, 1957, Nassau, New York (N.Y. State Death Index). 

 

“Jacob” – Henry Jacob Stegner was born on 26 March, 1878. St. Paul’s Church records list his birth name as Henry Jacob Stegner. He went by Jacob Henry Stegner on later records. 

 

In 1900 census Jacob was working as a farm laborer while living at home with his father. In 1910 Jacob is listed as the head of the family living on John Street. 

He was working as an at home farm laborer. 

 

On his WWI draft registration, he listed as a farmer working for the Garden City Company in Garden City, New York. He was blind in one eye. 

 

1920 census Jacob was living on Nassau Boulevard working as a farm laborer. Jacob also worked as a teamster at the racetrack (Belmont) on the 1930 census.  

 

Jacob Died 13 September, 1954 in Meadowbrook. Jacob was always listed as single on census documents and no spouse located. Burial location unknown.

 

“Henry” Heinrich George Stegner was born on 16 February, 1881. He was an at home farmer on the 1910 census with his brothers Jacob and William on John Street.

 

On the 1915, 1920 and 1930 census, Henry was working as a driver and a teamster at Belmont Park race track. He was listed as single on theses census 

documents.

 

On his WWI Draft Registration, Henry worked at the Belmont Park as a laborer. 

 

He died at West Hempstead, Nassau County, New York on 18 July, 1933.  Henry is buried in the St. Paul’s Church Cemetery, Elmont, New York. No spouse located. 

 

Phillip Stegner was born on 29 May, 1884 at New Hyde Park, New York. Phillip married Anna Bertha Senf in Nassau County, New York on 10 November 1909. On his WWI draft registration Phillip is listed as a gardener at J. J. Lanan. Phillip worked as an estate caretaker on the 1920 census and was living on the Old Country Road, Hempstead, New York. 

 

The 1930 census Philip was a foreman on the golf links. The 1940 census had Philip as a watchman at the county golf course.

 

On his WWII draft registration, he is listed as working at the Salisbury Golf Club, Westbury, Long Island, New York. 

 

Phillip died on 13 May, 1956 at Hempstead, New York. Phillip is buried in the Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale, Nassau, New York. 

 

Philip and Anna had seven children together:

 

Gertrude Stegner Grumbach born 10 December 1910, died 5 November, 1995 Glen Falls Hospital, New York.

 

Evelyn Stegner Taylor was born on 29 August, 1928. She married Charles Douglas Taylor Sr. She died on 21 March, 2010 in Buena Vista, Virginia.

 

Henry George Stegner was born on 5 July, 1914 in Munson. He died on 14 January, 1967. He is buried in the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York. No spouse found.

 

Philip Louis Stegner was born on 9 May, 1917. He died on 7 November, 1979 and he is buried in the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York. Philip was married to Mary Ottila Pankowski and they had two sons together.

 

Louis Frank Stegner was born on 20 January, 1924. Louis married Santa Dorothy (last name unknown) in 1945. They had at least one son Bruce G. Stegner. Louis died on 25 January, 1998 and is buried in the Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York. Santa D. Stegner is buried in the Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York. 

 

John Joseph Stegner was born on 21 May, 1925 and he died on 19 October 2001. He is buried in the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York. John was married to Lillia Jablonski and they had a son and daughter together.

 

Frank William Stegner was born on 9 August, 1931 and he died on 18 February, 1983. He is buried in the Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.

 

George August Stegner was born on 23 February, 1885. George married Gertrude Landgraf on 26 October, 1913 at Hempstead, Nassau County, New York. Gertrude was born on 13 January, 1890. 

 

From the 1915 to the 1950 census George and Gertrude were living on North Spruce Street in Hempstead, New York. His occupation through 1940 was as a house carpenter. 

 

WWII draft registration lists George working at The Great Pacific & Atlantic Tea Co. 

 

1950 Census George was a maintenance man at a publishing company. His wife Gertrude was hand posting at the publishing Company. 

 

His death date is 29 January, 1959 at Angle Sea, New York. Gertrude died on 11 August, 1975 in New Jersey. George and Gertrude are buried in the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, New York.

 

George and Gertrude had one son together:

 

George August Stegner Jr. was born on 18 August, 1914. George Jr., on his WWII draft registration dated, 16 October, 1940, lists a physical description with a limp and his right leg is shorter.

 

Louise Stegner was born in 1887 and her death date unknown. Louise married a Jacob Coskie 28 April, 1909. Jacob was born in October 1886. Jacob is listed on the 1910 & 1920 census as a garage machinist and mechanic. 

 

In 1920 Louise and Jacob were living on Gladys Avenue in Hempstead, New York. Jacob died sometime between 1920 and 1930. Louise is listed as a widow on the 1930 and later censuses. On the 1950 census Louise is listed a living on Poplar Street in Hempstead, New York. 

 

Louise and Jacob had two children together:

 

Marie Marian Coskie Kautz was born on 24 August, 1911. She married Arthur Kautz. She died on 17 December, 2000. 

 

Alfred J. Coskie was born on 9 March, 1914 in Lynbrook, New York. He married Margarite Lillian Tronsor.  He died in April 1980 at Valley Stream, New York.

 

William Stegner was born on 1 January, 1889 at New Hyde Park, New York. William is listed as an at home farmer on the 1910 census living with his father. 

William married Anna Nicholson on 26 April, 1913 in Nassau County, New York. William is listed as an at home farmer on the 1910. 

 

On his WWI draft registration, he has his occupation as owning his own business as a truckman and working for the Belmont Park in New York. He claimed an exemption due to a physical disability.

 

The 1920 census has William working as a farm laborer. He is listed as married but was not living with wife. 1930 Census he was working as a laborer on roads and was again listed as being single.

 

William’s death was on 13 March, 1937 and his was at the Plainview Sanitorium, New Jersey. William is buried in the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Elmont, New York. No additional information on Anna Nicholson.

 

Louis Clifford Stegner was born on 13 December, 1891 at New Hyde Park, New York. Louis married Hannah May “Hattie” Sammis on 5 June, 1913 in Nassau County, New York. Hannah was born November in 1893 in New York. She died on 28 September, 1968 at Angel Sea, Nassau County, New York. 

 

Louis’s WWI draft registration shows that his occupation was a mechanic working for Jacob Coskie in Lynbrook, New York. Louis owned the Lynbrook Garage on Sunrise Highway from 1903 to 1938. On the 1940 census he was working as a service manager for a beverage company. 

 

On Louis’s World War II draft registration, he was working for Boening Bros. in Rosedale, New York. In 1950 he was employed as an auto maintenance man at a wholesale beverage company. 

 

Louis died on 13 January, 1960 at Lynbrook, Nassau County, New York.

Louis and Hannah had one child together, 

 

 

Clifford Louis Stegner was born on 21 December, 1914 in Lynbrook, New York. Clifford married Althea Gerlach late 1942 or early 1943. He died on 22 October, 1997 at Tamarac, Broward, Florida. Clifford and Althea are buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens North, Pompano Beach, Broward County, Florida.
