Vogel

On 6 June 1853, Nicholaus Vogel, wife Anna Katherina Meuckel, son Daniel and daughters Anna Katherina and Maria Vogel landed in the Port of New York on the ship Edmund out of Bremen. They emigrated from Ellershausen, Hesse.  The family settled in Kings County but by the late 1850s, Daniel (b. 30 Dec. 1828) was farming in the Fosters Meadow area, identified over the ensuing years variously as Franklin Square, New Hyde Park and Garden City. Circa 1858, he married Margarethe Lindner (b. 30 Apr. 1838), who arrived in the Port of New York June 1 1854 on the ship Diana out of Bremen with her mother Dorothea and brother George and emigrated from Wilhelmsburg, Bavaria. Daniel was a farmer and a long-time member and Elder of St Paul’s German Presbyterian Church after it was organized in 1865. 

Daniel died 4 June 1902 and Margarethe 20 Oct. 1905 and both are buried at St Paul’s Cemetery. They had six children:

Caroline was born July 1858 and married Carl Mirschel (b. 1854) at St Paul’s 27 April 1876.He was a carpenter born in Germany and immigrated circa 1870. She died in 1939 and he in 1933.Both are buried at Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale, NY. They had six children. For more information, see Mirschel Family History.

Elizabeth was born Nov. 1859 in New Hyde Park and married Joseph Weckerle (b. Feb 1860 in Fosters Meadow) Mar 25 1884. He was a hotel keeper in Franklin Square at that time. By 1910 he began farming on Hempstead Turnpike. They had five children: Margaret (1885); Joseph (1886); Amalia (1888); Rosa (1891); George (1894). Elizabeth died in 1913 and Joseph in 1947. Both are buried at Greenfield Cemetery.

Emma was born Emphine Katherine in Franklin Square in 1865. She married John G. Naumann at St Paul’s 4 April 1884. They had two children: Margaretha Emilie born 27 July 1886 and Carl Jacob George born 3 Dec. 1890. Both were baptized at St Paul’s.

Daniel was born in Feb. 1868 and married Emilia (Millie) Puckhaber in Brooklyn on 6 Feb. 1895. He was a hotel keeper in the Town of North Hempstead. They had four children: Nicolas Daniel (1896); Daniel Richard Karl (1897); Emilia Josephine (1903); Lillian Helena (1905). Daniel is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn.

George was born 2 August 1870 in Franklin Square and baptized at St Paul’s. Like a number of his relations, he operated a hotel in the Town of Hempstead. In Oct. of 1892 he married Mary Conrad at St Paul’s. They had three children; George Conrad (1893); Daniel Herbert (1895); John (1898).

John William Friedrich was born 3 Aug 1872 and baptized at St Paul’s. He worked as a laborer on his father’s farm. On 2 Jan. 1905, he married Carolina Maria Graf at St Paul’s. They had one child, John Albert, in Dec. 1905.
